Follow a GPX route on Apple Watch without your iPhone
The watch navigates and records on its own, the iPhone only comes in at import. The file’s whole path, from the mail to the wrist, and what to expect out there.
Short answer: yes. An Apple Watch can follow a GPX trace, buzz when you leave it and record the whole outing with the iPhone left in the car. What it cannot do is receive the file: watchOS has no Files app, no mail attachments, no share sheet for a .gpx. So the iPhone is the front door, once, and the watch does the rest.
This is how it works in Ridge, step by step, including the parts that are Apple’s rules rather than ours.
1. Get the GPX onto the iPhone
Any way a file reaches your phone works: an email from a race organiser, a download from a route page, AirDrop from a friend, a file already in iCloud Drive. Open it and tap the share icon. Ridge is in the share sheet, like any app that reads GPX. Tap it, and the route lands in your library with its distance, elevation profile and a map.
Ridge shows up at the end of the row, because iOS orders the apps. To have it first: scroll the row of apps to More, tap Edit, then add Ridge to your Favorites. You only do it once.
If the route comes from a friend who uses Ridge, it is even simpler: they send a link, one tap opens it in Ridge, and you get exactly the same trace as theirs, notes included.
There is no export step and no web account in the middle. A route planned elsewhere gets in the same way, as soon as it is exported as a GPX. If the route only exists as a past activity, Ridge Pro can connect to your Strava account and turn one of your activities into a route directly, with no file; the same conversion works for runs recorded in Apple Fitness.
2. Let it sync to the watch
As soon as the route is in the library, Ridge pushes it to the watch. With the watch on your wrist and the phone nearby, it takes a few seconds to about half a minute. You can see what the watch actually holds in the app: a route is either on the wrist or it is not, and Ridge tells you which before you leave.
3. Start on the wrist and leave the phone
Open Ridge on the watch, pick the route, press Start. From here on, nothing needs the iPhone:
- The trace is drawn on the watch, with your position on it and the direction you are moving.
- Distance done and remaining, pace, heart rate and elevation gain are on the main screen. Big digits, one accent colour.
- One haptic tap the moment you drift off the trace (25 m by default, adjustable), and one when you are back on it.
- The notes you pinned on the route (“last water before the ridge”) tap your wrist as you approach.
- The whole run is recorded on the watch with GPS and heart rate.
When you come back within range of the phone, the activity syncs over on its own and shows up in Ridge and in Apple Fitness.
What the map looks like without the phone
A watch away from its phone has no map data unless someone put it there beforehand. Ridge handles this in two layers:
- Free: the trace, your position, distance markers and the elevation profile, on a plain background. That is enough to follow a route and to know you are still on it. It is what most people actually look at mid-run.
- Ridge Pro: download the map for a route before leaving and the watch draws it under the trace, offline. In France that is the IGN topographic map; the download is a few tens of megabytes per route and lives on the watch itself.
Things Apple decides, not us
- watchOS 26 and an Apple Watch Series 6 or later. Older watches do not run the current system.
- The iPhone is required to install and to import. Ridge on the watch is installed from the iPhone app, and the file has to enter through the phone.
- GPS is the watch’s own. Accuracy under dense canopy or in a gorge is what the hardware gives; the off-route threshold exists precisely to absorb that noise. See how the off-route alert works for the settings.
- Battery is the watch’s too. GPS plus heart rate plus an always-on screen costs the same in Ridge as in Apple’s Workout app. Try a shorter outing before a long day out on an older model.
A checklist for the trailhead
- The route shows as on the watch in Ridge on the iPhone.
- If you want the map under the trace: the download for this route is done (Pro).
- The watch is charged and you have opened Ridge on it once, so it has asked for location permission.
- Phone in the bag or in the car, watch on the wrist, Start.
That is the whole procedure. An unlimited route library and the full navigation are free; the iPhone stays in your pocket from the first kilometre to the last.
